Samsung US Headquarters Move Affects 739 New Jersey Jobs

Samsung is trading the Garden State for the Lone Star State, but not everyone is getting an invite.

Samsung Electronics America (SEA), the company’s consumer electronics business covering smartphones, TVs, displays, and home appliances, confirmed that 739 positions in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, have been affected by its decision to relocate its headquarters to Texas.

The company told Reuters that most affected employees have received relocation offers, while others have been laid off. Reuters also reported, citing a person familiar with the matter, that about 100 employees, including workers in Samsung’s mobile division in Plano, Texas, were laid off.

Documents reviewed by Reuters show employees were notified on June 30 of an “enterprise-wide reduction-in-force” that would have a “significant number of impacts.” LinkedIn posts reviewed by Reuters also indicated dozens of employees across New Jersey, Texas, and other US locations recently announced they had left the company.

Samsung said the relocation “may lead to changes in our workforce structure, such as employees who are unable to relocate, or certain functions that are optimized to ensure our roles align to key business priorities,” according to its statement to Reuters.

The company added that relocating the headquarters is intended to foster “stronger collaboration and optimize the organization by bringing more teams together within a growing technology and AI ecosystem.”

Consumer business faces pressure while chips surge

The restructuring comes as Samsung’s businesses head in opposite directions.

The South Korean company recently projected a roughly 19-fold increase in second-quarter operating profit, driven by booming demand for AI memory chips. At the same time, its consumer electronics operations are facing higher component costs and tougher competition.

Reuters reported that Samsung’s mobile business is expected to post its first-ever loss as it competes against Apple and growing Chinese rivals in smartphones, televisions and home appliances. Samsung stressed there is currently no broad global restructuring underway within its consumer products business.

Separately, Samsung SDS America, the company’s IT services affiliate, disclosed that 179 positions in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, could be affected by its own North American headquarters relocation. Samsung said those personnel changes are tied to the move rather than layoffs or restructuring.

How many Samsung jobs are affected

The relocation also reflects a wider industry trend of technology companies expanding operations in Texas, where Samsung already operates semiconductor facilities and a mobile hub.

The company employed 11,770 people in the US at the end of 2025, including its semiconductor workforce, according to Reuters. The headquarters move follows similar relocations by several major technology companies seeking to concentrate operations in regions with established technology infrastructure and business-friendly policies.

What this signals beyond Samsung

The move highlights how the AI boom is reshaping priorities inside large technology companies. While Samsung’s semiconductor business is benefiting from record demand tied to artificial intelligence, its consumer electronics division is under pressure from rising costs and slower growth.

Consolidating teams in Texas could improve coordination around the company’s expanding AI and semiconductor investments, but it also illustrates the human cost of corporate realignment. Even when relocation is offered, many employees may be unable or unwilling to move, making workforce reductions an unavoidable consequence of strategic shifts.
